Quand il \u00e9tait enfant, il adorait dessiner des avions, et, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 11 ans, il peint un P-51 Mustang Su\u00e9dois abattant un Me109 pour sa grand-m\u00e8re su\u00e9doise. Lorsque Roy termina ses \u00e9tudes et fut en \u00e2ge de servir dans les forces arm\u00e9es, et d\u00e9cida de choisir la Marine. Il fut post\u00e9 \u00e0 Guam. Apr\u00e8s son service, il suivit des cours \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole d\u2019art et de cr\u00e9ation de Los Angeles, et passa ses examens avec mention. Traduire l\u2019histoire de l\u2019aviation sur une toile est le point fort de Roy Grinnell, \u00e0 tel point qu\u2019il est mondialement reconnu comme l\u2019un des meilleurs artistes de l\u2019aviation. Ses illustrations de combats a\u00e9riens lui ont apport\u00e9 l\u2019honneur de devenir l\u2019artiste officiel de l\u2019Association des As de la Chasse Am\u00e9ricaine (American Fighter Aces Association) et du Hall des Illustres des aviateurs de combat, de la Commemorative Air Force (American Com- bat Airman Hall of Fame of the Commemorative Air Force). De plus, il a effectu\u00e9 des pein- tures command\u00e9es par l\u2019Association of Naval Aviation, le National Aviation Hall of Fame, \u00e0 Dayton, Ohio, et le Flying Tigers Association. Les relations privil\u00e9gi\u00e9es que Roy Grinnell entretient avec les As l\u00e9gendaires, lui ont per- mis de se faire une niche impressionnante dans l\u2019art de l\u2019histoire de l\u2019aviation sous forme de reproductions et publications. Son art a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9 dans le Naval Aviation News, le Foundation Journal, le magazine Aviation History, et The Flight Journal. Il est aussi le co-fondateur du Institute of Pacific Aircraft Research.
